Tomorrow when the sequel began…
The NSW Government says it will fight to keep production of Tomorrow When The War Began 2 in the Hunter after reports the Gold Coast was trying to lure the movie sequel to Queensland.
Gold Coast City Council was reported last week to be negotiating with producers of an unnamed production based on a work by an Australian author of teen fiction.
Tomorrow When the War Began , the No.1 Australian film at the box office last year with $13.5million in ticket sales, was based on the teen adventure novels by John Marsden.
The $27million action movie was shot around the Hunter in 2009, with Raymond Terrace, Dungog and Maitland providing backdrops.
Starring Lincoln Lewis and Phoebe Tonkin as country teens fighting an invading foreign army, the film brought $2.9million and 230 jobs to the region during 43 days of shooting.
Former NSW premier Kristina Keneally announced before Labor’s March election loss that Tomorrow 2 would be filmed in the Hunter from September.
The second movie’s bigger budget would add $5million to the region economy, generating 450 jobs, including cast, crew and extras.
Screen Hunter Central Coast manager Annette Hubber said that Tomorrow production company Omnilab Media had not advised if the sequel would begin filming in September as planned.
Production plans have reportedly been complicated by the first film’s disappointing box office takings overseas and writer-director Stuart Beattie signing to direct his first US film, I, Frankenstein later this year.
Omnilab managing director Christopher Mapp said last month he was committed to the Tomorrow franchise.
“We’re still absolutely keen to see some form of the franchise existing and that will definitely happen,” Mr Mapp told Inside Film magazine.
Omnilab originally proposed making two films and a spin-off TV series.
A company spokeswoman said there were ‘‘no further updates on this project at this stage’’.
The Gold Coast Bulletin reported last week that film scouts from an unnamed Melbourne production company would assess sites and facilities there following talks with Gold Coast council.
But the NSW Department of Trade and Investment, Regional Infrastructure and Services told the Newcastle Herald that Omnilab had advised that it had no plans to move production of Tomorrow 2 to Queensland.
‘‘The NSW Government remains committed to ensure the production of Tomorrow When the War Began 2 takes place in NSW,’’ a department spokesman said.
Industry sources told the Herald the Gold Coast project might be a Movie Networks TV series based on Gabrielle Lord’s Conspiracy 365 teen novels.
I think that there are upsides and downsides to the production in QLD. I think that it could possibly boost tourism if it is sorta announced. Like, after the movie has been filmed, people will want to see where it was filmed etc. However, the locations in NSW that have been stated I think look great based on my imagination. But that’s just my opinion. There are pros and cons from both sides. Anyone for the QLD and NSW premiers to play scissors paper rock?
THEY SHOULD!
agreed.
just make another one it is the best movie ever for australia and the world just play it somewhere
i dont care where they film it as long as they make more of them and i hope they are as good as the first one.
OMG!! please be in QLD!! i live there and i want to see it filmed!!!!!!! But i agree with COOPS, i like where the first movie was filmed and the Hell will look different which is BAD. But cant help rooting for me state!!!! GO QLD!!!!!!
I agree with twtwb@obsesed, I dont care where its made, just as long as it is. Trust the pollies to stuff everything up
When is it being released!?!?!?!?!?!
I just hope they hurry up and film it! I can’t stand waiting for it any longer!
the movie will just be ruined if filmed somewhere other than where the first one was filmed the scenery would be different, their houses also, hell would be different it would ruin the movie changing the scenery people wanna see what they saw in the first film !
^^ True
the first was really gud iv seen it 5 times now! hope the 2nd is just as good!
YOU’VE ONLY SEEN IT 5!! I THINK IVE SEEN IT MORE THAN 20 TIMES!!
I HOPE THEY FILM IT IN NSW!!! IT WONT BE THE SAME THEN IF THEY CHANGE TO QLD!!!! PLUS I WANNA SEE IT FILMED, CUZ DATS WHERE I LIVE!!
lol. iv read all the books about 2 billion tho!
I DONT CARE WHERE THEY FILM IT AS LONG AS ITS AS GOOD AS THE FIRST ONE AND THAT THEY HURRY UP AND FILM IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I CANT WAIT MUCH LONGER!!!!
I don’t care where it’s filmed- the set designers will match the new film locations to look like the first film.
In NSW where the book is based
Who gives? Just make them hurry up!
The book is based in Victoria…
i wish they would hurry up and make it. i know its hard, but seriously, I CANT WAIT ANY LONGER!!!!!!!!!!!!
Still waiting!!!!
Still waiting!!!!!
Still waiting!!!!!!
Type http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/9c/Angry_face.png the search engine to see my emotion about waiting this long!
i have read the books, and i believe that QLD is too commercial to hold such an important movie, NSW is the perfect place for them to be filmed, it even says in the book that he wrote it about places in NSW. anyway, QLD already has the state of origin, so leave these movies to NSW!
yea and the all blacks have the Bledisloe Cup! 30-14
AGREED!!!!!!
Waiting, waiting, waiting – haven’t had any news in months – what are they waiting for? Christmas, next year. Hmm.
i just wan the movie to come out cause i finished the last book of the series this morning like 2 hours ago and now i just want to see the movies come out !!!!!!!!!! and i agree with ALL the people who say it should still be in NSW not QLD!!!!!!! it like the hobbit with which they wanted to film over seas!!!!!!!!!!
just keep it in the same place as before!!!
i really do care where it is filmed because the scenery needs to be the same as the first movie to have the same sort of feel as the first movie does!!!!!
I want to be an extra!!!
can i join
no new news?
all i know is that we are all upset about the two year gap from the first movie to the second but the gap between the second and third will be only one year. yay
I think they should scrap the next movie if they are so caught up in international box office sales. This is obviously an Aussie classic series, so service your Aussie fans and create a TV series. I’ve read all the Tomorrow books, plus the Ellie Chronicals and I can envisage an UnderBelly style super series. I don’t like the idea of waiting 2 years between films anyway…
yea! thy could get the characters right! 4 seasons could do it each wit 10 eps or so.
It’s not all Australian, actually. The movie and the books are a massive hit in New Zealand, and there are tonnes of fans down here who’d love to see a sequel. Six more movies just isn’t a practical option, as the actors would get too old to play their parts (all the books only span over a year or so), but I would personally be more than happy to have a series air here in NZ too. Anyway, they cant afford to make another movie without international sales. They wouldn’t get back the money they invested into it.
Just a little bit of a heads up people you know how we have to wait 2 years until the next movie comes out in 2012 well the third movie will come out in 1213.
Two years until 2012? This is 2011, so really next year. Assuming that it is made and released, that is.
The producers should have introduced younger actors around the age of sixteen or seventeen to match the characters in the novel. Caitlin Stasey was nineteen when it was filmed, twenty when it was showing and now twenty-one for filming again. The cast of Harry Potter for example were right on the novel age and grew up as the films progressed through the years. Even though they went slightly over their age towards the end you didn’t even notice. I think that not having some of the cast members for younger people to further the possible film adaptations would have been a sacrifice well made. That said, I think each and every cast member is perfect in their role.
its a good point Chris. I can see the point U are making but we have already shot the first movie which means no turning back. it was quite a silly mistake made by the director but i guess we will just have to live with it
i think that it will just ruin the movie if they change location so they should keep it in NSW. Good on the Government of NSW keep fighting to keep TWTWB in NSW. Also after all of what i have said i guess that it sorta doesnt matter where it is filmed so long as it keeps on being filmed.
Could not agree with Mel more. Loved the production value, sets, cast, teen angst and even the cheese of the dialogue of the movie but to do it the best they should turn it into a gritty TV series. Like they have done with the ‘Game of Thrones’ books.
The bulk of fans, the ones who read the books when they were fresh in high school would all be early to mid 20′s now so why not give us what we want.
I have just watched Tomorrow When The War Began what .. movie .. please make the sequel … it was fantastic .. on of the best Aus films i have seen in 30 years
I’m sure it would be great for Qld but wow, I just watched the movie and what a crock of shit! Those kids are borderline retarded, although two of the actresses are hot. Virtually none of what they did would have worked in reality. I mean, could a bridge possibly be that flimsy? Also modern armies build pontoon bridges inside of a few hours and would have a bridging company nearby a strategically important bridge anyway. Those kids would have died within the first 24 hours. I mean, driving on the open road in broad daylight? Please! And blowing up a ride-on lawnmower and killing All of those those dumb solseveral enemy troops? The air force should start using lawnmowers instead of bombs. And then standing around waiting and tending to wounds afterward, just assuming the mower would have killed everyone? And how could those two ATV’s not easily keep up with a dump truck? Instead they drove all over the place until they crashed, simply confirming the stereotype of Asian drivers. And how did those two dumb girls sit in the tanker talking about boys until those dumb soldiers snuck up on them? I mean, they had already alerted the enemy and then just assumed no one would spot the stolen tanker sitting in the open to the extent they didn’t even keep a lookout. They actually deserved to die. Anyway, in conclusion, I assume John Marsden must be retarded.
You’ve probably bought the DVD home, sat down and watched it and most likely come straight onto here to have a whinge. I’m not sure if you realise this was based on a novel. A descriptive and beautifully written piece of writing by John Marsden.
First off you say how two actresses are hot, which shows either how young you are and your first opinion on the acting is their looks, or you’re old and obviously need to find yourself a woman of your age.
One side of the bridge’s support was blown out from under itself which would have a domino effect pulling the rest into the river. I’m not sure if you realised how large the gap was from one side to another, but I’d really enjoy watching a platoon knock a bridge up that is safe enough for a hundred truck convoy to travel every hour.
In a film adaptation, the story changes based on the director and writing teams. When driving through daylight in the landrover when Chris was introduced never happened in the book (you’d know, if you read it). Chris was introduced the night Lee was rescued when their secondary car was at his house.
When the lawnmower was blown up it showed Ellie looking at one of the soldiers die, and the other two were on fire and not moving. I think it’s general knowledge that when you’re on fire you would have an instant reaction to try and put it out. Judging off that you know they’re dead and as for tending to their wounds, Corrie looks down at her knee before the explosion. Kevin and Corrie were calling for Ellie afterwards from a distance.
The ATV’s were keeping up with the garbage truck. They crashed because they were driving irrationally to dodge the garbage when it was dropped, and also other obsticles on the road. Your comment about asians was uncalled for as a nationality of the invading force was never explained in the novel.
Again, the film has been changed to incorperate suspense. In the novel a few times they parked the truck and climbed tree’s to hide from passing soldiers. They were never chased out of the petrol depot. When they were talking it was to help develop the storyline with the romance of Fi and Homer and Ellie and Lee, what the girls were thinking. They also had a lookout, as Robyn, Chris, Corrie and Kevin all were trying to contact them when they saw the advancing soldiers but Fi’s radio was turned off.
All your points have been addressed and it all comes down to your lack of knowledge on the novels. If you had read them, watched the film, and then come here with valid points you might have been taken more seriously. However, you come in here with inadequate knowledge and a horrible attitude.
Bahaha love it Chris! i love the movie…but haven’t read the books (not that I don’t read, I just never got around to this series), but I know you can’t expect everything to be the same as they have to make it work for the camera/audience and fill in the gaps because a book is more descriptive and can put thoughts and things in words. Anyone who whinges about a movie that was based off a book is a doosh, obviously it was a well written and loved book for it to be made into a movie.
Hey man i agree, but the book wasn’t written like that. I didn’t think the movie portrayed the book very well. Speaking of military tactics and such, is there an existing soldier that would “sneak up” on the 2 girls in a truck with their weapon lights on? I noticed stacks things that made no sense. What they need to fix this up is some kind of military advisor to make the movie more believable.
the book is a lot different in the book u need 2 read it!
Geez Glenn, obviously not a fan. You haven’t read the books. Quite a strong opinion, everyone is entitled to their opinion. But I won’t stand for your nasty comment about John Marsden! He is an absolute genius! His writing is so beautiful and descriptive, I’ve read his stories many times over. I’m partial to the Tomorrow series. It makes me proud to be an Australian the way he describes our country, the bush and farming life. Being from a city I loved how it brought the country right into my bedroom. As well the characters and thrilling story were so unique but also had a realistic quality to them. I know the movie wasn’t perfect it’s the age old dilemma book v movie but for me at least it was an addition to the stories. Fun to watch but the books are something special you should read for yourself. You would have a changed opinion about John Marsden I guarantee it!
You really need to read the books. They are amazingly written and i read the whole series in a week. I just can’t wait for the second movie to come out. Does anyone know if they have started filming?
No filming has started yet. It’s been delayed. I know this because i sent an e-mail to Omnilab media. I do wish they’d hurry up. Such a great film deserves a sequel or Six sequels to make the series like the books. Also a TV series of the Ellie Chronicles would be great too.
They really need to sort out this QLD/NSW ownership war and get on with filming
Agreed. I believe it should stay in NSW to keep up with continuity. Also with Talks of the director filming another film at the moment, i wish they would keep focused on the one project at a time. Part 2 should have been filmed directly after part 1 was finished. The popularity of the first one was big here in Oz and to a certain extent in the UK.
the tomorrow series should be more important as the actors need to stay the same age and we are halfway through the project. I don’t know what i would do if they cancelled this sequel, probably explode.
THey should make a 2nd 2moz when the war began the 1st 1 ruled!!!!!!!!1
I Know most of the cast are ready to film part 2 but Stuart Beattie is working on another project at this point and that film won’t be released until 2013. I Hope he gets back here soon and gets to work on TWTWB2 before the entire fanbase drops off.
Just finished watching the movie yesterday after picking up book 2 and doing 2-7 in about a week. I would have to say that I thought the movie was good. The first 22 minutes before they had to leave hell was amazingly good and I almost wish that that part had continued on for a while longer… As for the rest of the movie it was fairly good but I would love it if the earlier parts would have dragged on longer. (People who maybe haven’t read the series might have disagreed and wanted more action)
I feel like the earlier bits because they had no action in them were good because they were just as good of quality as any hollywood movie if not better because I knew the characters from the books and the actors were doing a good job. But then when all the action started it seemed like they were trying so hard to make it hollywood wood type action so non book readers would be drawn. Example… Ellie and Co carrying around guns which I do not remember them doing at all in the first couple books and when they did Ellie went off on Homer for doing so. (Bringing the shotgun along for fitting the timer to the convoy I believe?)
As for who was played by who I thought that Ellie and Homer was spot on and seemed to really match their characters in the book. Corrie, Kevin and Fi were also done pretty well and I have no grievances about them.
As for Robyn, I haven’t read the first book in a while, since I picked up the series at book 2 after not reading it for a long time, so maybe I forgot how she was in the first book. But the Robyn in the movie just seemed so off to me. She came off as this shy religious girl while to me in the books she was more of this solid religious “zealot?” who easily stood on her own and was someone that everyone could draw strength from.
Lee I think had alot of potential as he seemed to physically fit the role but seemed somewhat lacking in his lines but as is the same with Robyn I seem to remember that he didn’t begin to become very prominent until book 2 so maybe my opinion will change when they release the second movie. Oh and Chris. Almost forgot about him. My first thoughts when I saw Chris was how in the hell did this guy do all the hiking these guys did, cause he seemed alot heavier then everybody else and didn’t seem like a fit guy. He also wasn’t exactly how I imagined him but I still think he did a pretty good job of doing his role.
I know this is getting a bit lengthy (and the grammar is horrible) so ill just mention a couple of my favorite parts from the movie.
- Homer’s introduction
- “I want Lee!” “I… want… Leeee!!” “This is Lee” /embarassed look.
- When Robyn and Chris are on sentry duty as they are going to blow up the bridge and he starts to light up a cigarette and she just looks at him and he closes the cap.
- The part where Ellie is screaming at Chris, though it pissed me off cause it broke off her moment with Lee. (Was a pretty big fan of the whole Ellie/Lee relationship the whole series so I was kind of pissed off with how Marsden had it go no where at the end of the series.)
I really hope they make a second movie!
Nick, have you read the Ellie Chronicles? It’s the trilogy regarding the aftermarth of the war.
Went and read it a few days after I posted that. I was really happy with how he finished up the series. Especially Ellies relationship with Lee.
i have 2 agree with everything u have said!
Just realised that there is a forums on this website… sorry for the long ass comment… Guess it should be in the forums…
Would be great for it to be in Queensland, but i honestly don’t mind, as long as there is another one with Lincoln Lewis in it, preferably shirtless
OMG! I believe it should stay in Victoria because people will notice the different locations and it wont work as well.
Well thats what I think anyway :]
Mate i reckon the books are brilliant though, read the series twice.. incidents with the enemy were explained much better
hi everyone
i have heard around that they have 1 started to film the next movie and 2 they had to stop because they didnt have enough money. I personally dont think this is true but i just wanted anyone you did know the actual answer to please tell me.
thx:)
I wrote to Omnilab on the progress of Tomorrow When The War Began 2 and they have said that it is in development. There is no set shoot date yet. Keep your eyes peeled on The official Facebook and TWTWB website for updates. That’s why i tip they’re waiting for Stuart Beattie to come back and direct it. Just hope this happens soon. I Frankenstein starts filming in Early 2012, but it would be nice to hear an update that’s official.
I think it should be filmed in NSW where it originally was filmed. To me not shooting it there is like not shooting Harry Potter in England, its just not right. LOVE the books and a GREAT movie adaption. Keep it this good and GO NSW!!!!!!!!!!
Great comment! Totally agree.
Well please tell me if you guys know anythingabout the sequel this movie is just so great and i just have to see a sequel!!!!
There’s a mixed opinion at this point. There’s been talks of this film being cancelled while Omnilab Media still say it’s in development. Hard to know really. Talks also that Stuart Beattie may not be on board for this second film. If That’s The Case, They’ll need someone else to write and direct it. That’s all i know up to this point.
I heard that bout a year ago, Beattie was writting it. So, chances are, it’s already been written. But, unfotunately, I signed up for update emails (link on offical TWTWB page) in the middle of August 2011, and no emails.
It’s not getting tiresome – it’s already there. For me, anyways.
