Tomorrow series set to film on Gold Coast
The next movie adaptation in John Marsden’s Tomorrow When the War Began book series could be the latest blockbuster film made on the Gold Coast.
Gold Coast City Council has confirmed it is negotiating with a Melbourne film company about plans to make a movie here based on work by an Australian author who writes teenage fiction.
Film industry sources confirmed it was most likely the second in the Tomorrow series, which started with Marsden’s best known book Tomorrow When The War Began and includes seven volumes.
Councillor Susie Douglas confirmed there had been talks with members of a company recently and representatives would soon travel to the Gold Coast to look at sites and facilities.
”They are interested in looking at the the Gold Coast and we would love to get another film made here,” she said.
Council released figures yesterday that showed attracting the Bait 3D and Singularity films, along with the fifth Sea Patrol television series had translated into $62 million of investment and 1100 jobs for the Gold Coast in two years.
PJ Hogan’s film Mental, starring Toni Collette, is expected to boost the economic benefits of the film industry further when filming starts on the Gold Coast in July.
Council offered cash payments of between $50,000 and $150,000 to companies involved in the productions to establish themselves on the Gold Coast as part of its Investment Attraction Program.
Other companies, including IBM and SurfStitch, have relocated to the Gold Coast since the program started and are claimed by council as part of its success story.
Gold Coast film industry member Ryan Makepeace was thrilled to hear about negotiations relating to the Tomorrow series, particularly since he counts himself among Mr Mardsen’s biggest fans.
”I was considering moving to Sydney to work on the second film,” he said.
“I would love it if the film came here.”
The first film, which cost $27 million to make, was released last year.
Yes! Woot! Dead of the Night, here we come!
They probably wont call it Dead Of Night because it is books 2 and 3 combined meaning Dead Of Night and The Third Day, The Frost.
They really should do one book at a time but watever
But would it be the same as the Hunter? Cause they transformed King St in the Hunter and filmed it there so shouldn’t the sequel be the same? Or are they not going into town at all? This will probably sound naive but I didn’t think there was much bush in queensland, but it’s a massive place so I guees there aught to be.
I want to know who is going to play Major Harvey.
and also Hell and stuff, shouldn’t it all be filmed in the same place as the first movie?
yes, Yes YES!!! it would be really shit if hell looks different
There is plenty of bush in queensland, though its not the same as victoria, its a bit drier but it would still work for when they go out through the other side of hell
I live in Sydney and haven’t traveled Aus much so I don’t know much.
But for the locations they have already filmed in, surely they’ll use the same location cause otherwise the film will loose credibilty and (I hate to say this, but I have HSC English all thru my brain) textual integrity.
If they do film on the Gold Coast, it doesn’t mean that they won’t also film in the same locations as before. Most films use many locations, just like Tomorrow When the War Began did. I’m sure that they will at least use the same locations for the centre of Wirawee and Hell.
I live in Brisbane, Queensland’s capital and also have lived in Melbourne, Victoria and there are some parts of Queensland that I frequent that are most definitely as beautiful as Victorian bushland. We have ample places, especially around the gold coast and hinterland that are incredibly dense bushland and some rainforrest too.
I really hope they can film on the coast!! I’d take the day off work just to go see.
OMG! YEYEYEYEYYEEYEY! EXCITE!!!
Yeah maybe they will film the holloway valley up there. Lol, paradise city should be stratton!
Nothing has been confirmed as yet. The company I work for worked on the first film and are currently speaking to Ambience/Omnilab regarding the 2nd feature. In response to some of the incorrect facts posted above:
They transformed King Street in Raymond Terrace to Film the Scenes set in Wirawee (not King Street, Newcastle as many people believe) and the “Hell” scenes were actually filmed in the Blue Mountains and not in the Hunter Valley. All indications from our end still point to the Hunter Valley for filming the 2nd installment at this stage but it is all still up in the air due to the poor response the film received in the EU.
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
The Newcastle Herald has further information this week on the report that TWTWB2 may shoot in QLD.

i dont mind where . i just cant wait for the movie !!!
The poor response in Europe was probably because they don’t understand us aussies and our ways. And they’re probably not keen on invasion movies.
But their loss.. I loved the movie!! Bring on no.2
.. and 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.
Thankyou, that will be all.
Liz and everyone: I am a Swiss (well Switzerland is the last ‘island’ around here not part of the EU but at the heart of it and part of the same diversified culture). I only discovered this incredible story, the Tomorrow-Series, because I am working in the home entertainment business and distributed the movie in Switzerland. In the German speaking territories Germany, Switzerland (German speaking part), Austria, Liechtenstein, part of Luxembourg only 3 books have been translated in the past decade. Basically no one knows these great books. It is awful, but you can’t change this. The movie would have to be much bigger than what it was. You must be able to speak english and quite well to dig the books in full. I am in love with the audio books and listening to Suzi Dougherty as Ellie has been life changing and also changing all rules for me, because I am an old guy and father of three daughters reading/listening this (who I am forcing now to join the movement
. Please just know that the few smart people who have discovered it in these parts of the world, like me, really ARE UNDERSTANDING the story, learning a thing or two about Australia and love it. Sometimes a bit too much even, because the books can be a very strong drug if you get what I mean…. and they are probably and I have to say frighteningly so, more realistic than ever! (if you follow development in the world…not saying more here..)
