The Boys of Tomorrow Announced!

The boys of Tomorrow (from left to right): Chris Pang as Lee, Deniz Akdeniz as Homer, Lincoln Lewis as Kevin and Andy Ryan as Chris
THE YOUNG MEN OF TOMORROW: ANNOUNCED TODAY
After much speculation, Director Stuart Beattie announces his male leads in the feature film adaptation of John Marsden’s best-selling book, TOMORROW: WHEN THE WAR BEGAN
Ambience Entertainment today announced that Director Stuart Beattie has cast his four young male leads in the feature film, TOMORROW: WHEN THE WAR BEGAN.
Chris Pang has been cast as Lee, Deniz Akeniz as Homer Yannos, Andy Ryan as Chris Lang and Lincoln Lewis as Kevin Holmes.
They join Caitlin Stasey as Ellie, Phoebe Tonkin as Fiona and Ashleigh Cummings as Robyn.
Chris Pang studied at The Australian Film and Television Academy for two years. He has more than 12 years of traditional Chinese martial arts training and has appeared in the feature, Film Citizen Jia Li, as well as the 2006 feature, Home Song Stories, and the Channel 10 series Real Stories. He recently moved to Hong Kong looking for more interesting roles, but returned as soon as he heard TOMORROW was casting.
Twenty-year-old Pang, who is learning piano for the role of Lee, said: “I studied TOMORROW: WHEN THE WAR BEGAN at school and have always thought John Marsden was a brilliant writer. One of my favourite themes in the book is the idea of the characters having freedom from their parents, something most teenagers want, and how the characters then deal with that freedom.”
Deniz Akdeniz, 21, will play Ellie’s best “boyfriend” – the loud-mouthed, crazy but brave Homer Yannos. Deniz played Raff for two years in the television production of When the Bell Rings and has appeared in the theatre production of Angels with Dirty Minds at the Melbourne Arts Centre. Deniz further honed his performance skills with short courses at TAFTA, NIDA and St Martins Youth Theatre. He is a Victorian Jiujitsu Champion.
He said: “I read the book in grade 5 and 6 and when I heard about the audition I read the book again. It was brilliant to switch off the TV and again immerse myself into the world of TOMORROW.”
21 year-old Andy Ryan – who will bring the loner Chris to life in the film – was “over the moon” when he landed the role.
He said: “I am really enjoying preparing for the role as the introverted and obscure character, Chris. This is an amazing opportunity”.
Andy is currently appearing in the television series, The Jesters.
Lincoln Lewis – who played Geoff Campbell on the Channel 7 series, Home and Away – said this is his dream role.
“I’m an enormous fan of the books,” he said. “My brother and I would race each other to read all the books in the series. I have always dreamed of the books being made into a film.”
Stuart Beattie added: “The talent of these four young actors is truly formidable and I feel honoured to work with them. Their energy, passion, and commitment is astonishing.”
I think they look pretty good, not exacly like I had them in my head, but its impossible to have that, so i’m happy with the choices……I’m glad that they kept Lee asion, and Homer greek-looking.

That’s the thing though, they’re never gonna look the way everyone pictures them, for some people they maybe the exact image. I’m a bit disapointed in Lee. But it’s gonna be they’re acting that really makes it, and Stuart Beattie seems to have a lot of faith in everyone selected. I’m sure the movie’ll never live up to the book (how many movies ever do?), but I’m excited, it’s all starting to become a big reality. I’m just really itching now to see it; I don’t care who’s in it, as long as they do their part great

The Terrace is close to the coast but is a pretty good match to Wirrawee. It is on the Hunter River and the street that they are filming in runs along the river. The books describe the Wirrawee River running through the town. And with Williamtown RAAF Base close by and Jets flying over all the time lends an authentic feeling of a war zone to the set.

Jordan Rodrigues (Jai on home and away) has the right amount of mystery, attractiveness and humour for Lee. Such an awesome book! I am definately keen to see what this will look like, and I pray that my gut instincts about these casting choices are wrong. I think it looks too teeny bopperish. Not a true representation of Australian rural teens. The last thing a classic like this needs is H&A and Neighbours actors. I think that producers have been too concerned with casting people from other shows we’ve seen, rather than true casting. I guess its hard as they want people recognised to get people interested. I hope that the film does justice to book, otherwise we will wish they hadn’t touched it. FYI I’ve heard that they are giving the invaders a nationality, which is concerning.

Yeah I think you might be right. I myself was suprised at being granted an audition for Homer based on my look as I do look rather young.. one of the first things the casting director asked me was how old I was, and I said 26. Even though I gave an awesome performance for my audition, receiving very positive feedback.. deep down I knew my age wasn’t going to do me any favours in being cast, along with the fact that I am rather unkown in the Australian Film & TV industry. And we all know how conservative the industry over here is. Europe is my desired destination.

I understand that casting is more about the actors’ acting abilities over their physical appeal but in my opinion, casting could have put a bit more effort into their decision when it came to Lee. Firstly, he is described in the book as tall, dark, mysterious and most importantly handsome, this actor portrays none of these traits.
How beautiful he is, is stated time and time again in the series, casting should have put more effort into this factor rather than just choosing the first Asian-looking-guy who could act. Lee’s grace and beauty is as big a part of the story as is his Asian heritage so why settle with only one of those attributes?
He is also half Thai, half Vietnamese, hence the ‘dark’ trait. It makes me wonder if the people doing casting were taking us all for fools, just because he’s Asian it doesn’t make him right for the job. Picking someone from a Chinese background for this role isn’t much different to picking a Caucasian, it’s just not right. Not unlike High 5 replacing Cathleen with another Asian girl (did they not think we’d notice!?) and Chinese and Malaysian actresses chosen to star in lead roles in the film Memoirs Of a Geisha, fans and the general public need to be given more credit, yes we know the difference and yes it matters!! Poor effort.

I am a huge fan of the series and have been waiting for years for them to finally make them into a film….. unfortunately I would have to agree and say Im really really disappointed in the actors cast as Lee and Homer. It may seem shallow but I (and more than likely everyone who has ever read the books) had pictured both of these guys as much more attractive people then they have cast. If they are wanting to make these movies as big as possible then they should have cast much more attractive actors in the two main male roles – as sad as it is, its also true that 99% of people would rather see attractive people acting these parts! You only have to see what Robert Pattison has done for twilight to see this is true….. and no Im not suggesting that they get Robert to star in the series…. but someone remotely good looking as Lee and Homer is going to help bring in all those extra people who are not already fans of the books!!! All of the females that have been cast are really attractive so Im not really sure what happened with the guys?? I have my fingers crossed that maybe they may re think their choice – for Lee especially!

doug i think you need to reread the books, no attack on you personally but as tiff has pointed out lee is of half thai and half vietnamese heritage and chris looks to sterotypically chinese rather then thai/vietnamese.
Based on physical apparences i admit i have been quick to judge but i first brought this book 10years ago and have continued to read it many times since, recently started again 2weeks ago and then my flatmate told me of the movie so its not like i havnt had a particular image in my head for some time
i hope chris does the role justice but at this stage i dont see it happening.
Oh I agree about Lee – he’s not at all what I would be hoping for – I still remember reading the book in year 9 (like 12 years ago!) and thinking he was just so sleazy (but in a good way if that’s possible!) and handsome. No offense, but Pang just doesn’t fit into that imagine at all. Nothing worse than the characters of a movie ruining the imagination of the book. Poor effort on that casting sorry.

Fully understand what you mean about the sleezy in a good way lol, i think its cause lee’s character comes on so strong in the book and at times hes trying to force ellie into making a decision about their relationship + he goes off with the enemy in burning for revenge, who does that when theyve just invaded your country and killed your parents!?!?
Reply to this comment
I dont know if anyone else will agree with me but when i was reading the books, i pictured evryone differently. No offence to all these actors, but they all seem like they would suit a soap opera rathar than the Tomorrow series. With the exception of Chris’s actor who i think would make a good drunk
But HOMER, how could they get that guy to do homer????? Homer’s like the best one, if he (this actor) kills the acting, he’ll kill the hopes of everyone that’s read the books. To further my rant, wasnt Homer “fat” in the beginning of the series?? And wasnt he like built and “stocky” There better be a massive punch to the acting or i’ll be one VEEERYYYYY disappointed fan.
They should have gotten their actors from real farms, would be so much more “authentic”.
But what the hell do i know right?
Apart from my rant, I hope they all do well.
P.S. Did everyone find a character they can relate to as well??

Calm down, everyone!!! No body knows what these actors really look like or are capable of from one simple photo. Its like passing a death sentence without judgement!!! Is it fair???
In Hollywood, they always cast actors as different nationalities, like Tom Cruise as Nazi, Sean Connery who is a Scot as English (Bond), Russian (Red October), American (Indiana Jones) Zhang Ziyi as Japanes (Geisha). So what is the big deal about their nationalities??
Everyone’s image of these characters is different, we need to be confident in Stuart Beattie’s intepretaions and professionalism. He has more experience and knowledge than all of us!!! More time invested and effort spent than all of us. Yes, we have read the books, yes, we are keen supporters and that makes us passionate about our opinions, but they are NOT always right.
So hold your horses and at least give the actors a fair go in presenting themselves first. Lee looks mysterious and handsome enough to me (the tan can be fixed easily anywhere)and Homer looks rugged enough to me too. My own images of Lee and Homer fit the actors chosen. I have many Asian and Mediterranean friends, many, you can’t really tell where exactly they are from.

One more thing, the most famous iconic Australian western movie set in a ‘country’ environment wriiten by an Australian legend, Patterson, has to be “Man from a Snowy River’. The movie was an internatinal sucess. Let’s look at the 3 main characters: 1.Tom Burlinson (Born in Toronto, grown up attending Pittwater High School on Sydney’s Northern Beaches).
2. Sigrid Thorton (Born in Canberra, brought up in Brisbane and started her career in London)
3. Kirk Douglas (Born in New York, bred and educated there, say no more)
Conclusion: 1. Not all actors are Australians.
2. None is from the region at all!!!!
P.S. Is our own Nicole Kidman French in Moulin Rouge? or Mel Gibson Scottish in Braveheart or Russell Crowe Itaian (in Gladiator or was Heath Ledger born in Gotham City?? Does it really matter???? Movies are about creating a visual illusion, transforming our inner imagination into visual sensations, so reserve your judgement till your are visually stimulated!!!
Reply to this comment
I totally agree!!! Logical and well put. Does it matter if they are from the “farm”?? Plus, how can anyone tell what they really look like from this ONE photo?? May be that’s the whole point, they dont want us to know what they really look like yet, so we dont make any assumptions. Anyway, if I have to make any assumption, then Homer looks tough, level-headed and resourceful in that straight forward confronting gaze and Lee looks complex, introverted with a hidden touch of aggression through that side glance with a deep frown. Chris has that hippy-ish drunk look and Kevin a big-talking arrogant guy pushing himself forward and arms folded to make his point known. Read the subtle body language and facial expressions from these actors, and cant help thinking “Wooo Perfect!!!!” Absolutely Perfect!!! Wait till I see the movie……

I think they all look great and the people who are judging them on their looks are really wrong, they fit my imaginings on the characters and to those who say that they have to be as “hot” as Robert Patterson obviously have a type and not everyone likes the same thing many “ugly” actors have had really good careers, I mean god Seth Rogen for crying out loud! He’s a scruffy pig really and he is Hollywood famous. I think these guys would do a great job and imagine how you would all feel if you were slammed about your looks when trying to work? Anyway they are supposed to be everyday kids from the country, can you honestly say that you’d actually like to go and see a movie about impossibly gorgeous teenagers from the country? It’s just not believable and I love the fact that they look like normal kids!
Give them a break and if you really are fans then you wouldn’t be dissecting the movie like this before you even sit down and watch it.

I agree 100%.
A movie with models cast as everyday country kids would be completely unrealistic.
Besides, actors change their appearance to suit the role they play – ie. Robert Pattinson – and rarely look the same in real life as they do in their movies.
On the whole, I’m pretty happy with the casting, and I’m glad they chose actors who look like normal people.

When i first saw the lineup of guys i wasn’t convinced that they picked the right ppl for the roles. I read all of your comments and then i enlarged the pic and had another look. Now i’ve changed my mind, i do think they picked the right ppl. I just imagined Kevin with darker hair & not such a pretty boy (as lincoln is) but otherwise good choices all round. If I was Ellie i’d choose Homer over Lee!!!!! in the last two weeks i’ve re-read all 7 TWTWB books & 3 EC books
love it

Just reading previous comments and responing on the comments that some people were hoping for more attractive characters. I have to disagree. What i loved the most about the books was the way that john marsden described the characters all of them weren’t overly attractive or pretty except for lee and that one of the best qualities of the book as it was more realistic. Real life isn’t full of beautiful and handsome people like the way it’s portrayed in those hollywood movies. it probably doesnt make much sense but it kinda does to me but i guess it’s all in the way we imagined the characters i guess

i definately agree renee life isnt made up of beautiful people, but even you pointed out lee was made out to be overly handsome and in this respect i feel they have failed. i think the other actors will be great providing they have read the books but for me part of the mysteriousness surrounding lee is his half thai/half vietnamese heritage and chris pang is too sterotypically chinese for my liking and as it seems many others to
hope they can make it work, am excited to see final results

I agree with everything except the part about Lee being overly handsome. No one seems to have thought about the fact that these books have been written through the eyes of Ellie… who is in love with Lee. Of course she’s going to say that he’s attractive! I mean, I think my boyfriend is the most attractive man in the world but a lot of other people wouldn’t say so…
Lee’s beauty could also be inner beauty, yes he can be graceful and have slender fingers… as he’s a great pianist, but his mysterious personality could make him that much more appealing to Ellie…
I’m not slamming your opinion, I just thought it’s another thing to think about

That’s a really good point, the entire book is written from Ellie’s point of view and no one else ever says Lee is beautiful. So you are absolutely right, Lee is only handsome in Ellie’s eyes. Plus, Lee was probably one of the very few Asians in Wirrawee and may be his unusual and exotic looks are intepreted by Ellie as ‘beautiful’, whereas he could be very ordinary looking to another.
Most Thai and Vietnamese have Chinese background and the simple fact that his name is LEE indicates that his family had a strong Chinese connection, by the spelling, probably Cantonese.

Totally hadnt thought of it from that perspective and i agree but as i have said in other comments based on first looks i dont see him as the image myself and many others (based on comments) created of lee, i wish him all the best in portraying the character and hope the movie turns out great, if the acting and portrail of lee is good then i speak for myself in saying i wont care what he looks like
the tomorrow book where the first books i ever read. i lernt to read in year 10 and have been waiting for a movie ever since. i think the carsting is good but not perfect as noting can be. i agree with some of the stuff about Lincoln Lewis being a bit to pretty. but it will be fun to see him cumble in burning for revenge. his fall for grace will be better for his pretty boy looks. i mean he suppose to fall apart so who cares if he look pretty when he’s a cowarg.
lee look good enough and im sure the guy can be fordard, sleezy, queit and mysterious all that stuff is not looks it personalty.
the guy playing Homer is greek looking enough and it’s not to hard to be an ass but it will hard to be a good guy pretending to be an ass. but i do hope that they can pull off being golden polpe as ellie calls them in E.C. excpt Kevin of couse.

I think Lincoln Lewis as Kevin is great, I hate home&away but just from that photo he looks like a good kevin. No offense to the actor, but Lee is meant to be Vietmanese and like tanned and quite good looking. He does not fit the role at all, the actor playing Homer better cut his hair or I will completley hate him, he does not fit for Homer Yannos. The actor playing Chris is alright but I imagined him way better in the book.

spot on, Doug, I have just checked out Chris Pang on youtube, he is perfect. He has that mysterious, dark, hidden angry look. That ‘dark’ personality Chris Pang can delivere as intended by Marsden is far more improtant than the cheap fake ‘dark’ skin anyone can get instantly these days.

i rekon chris pang actually does fit it quite well because i saw him on youtube and he was absoulutley brilliant. i have no doubt he will do the the movie justice. go twtwb!
Who really cares who’s playing who. Maybe we’ve seen them act before and we think they’re crap and maybe we don’t think they look right for the part. But we’ve never seen them in their roles in ‘Tomorrow’ so I don’t think we can really judge them until we do. I’m sure some of us who might be a bit upset with the casting now, will change our minds when we see the movie. Right now all I care about is the fact that they’re making the movie, and hanging out for the day I get to see it

I love this book series, and I think these 4 guys will be great to play the characters. I’m just hoping that the movie will follow the book, and not turn bad and stupid, like so many other book to movie adaptions. But i hope this will be just as awesome as the books,, good luck!

Damn at first I thought Andy Ryan was going to be Homer as thats pretty much what he looks like in my head .. kinda mischievous, but oh well. At least Lee looks pretty spot on. They are all a bit pretty-boyish for my liking, I would have liked more hardy outback kinda guys personally.

Hey, I totally agree, Lee looks spot on, he looks great, in fact, all of them look really spot on, all the effort in casting has paid off, well done, casting guys. This movie will rewrite Australian movie history, it will be the turning point and the pivotal movie that takes Aussie movies from ‘good’ to the ‘best’ in the world. Go, TWTWB!!!

The guy who plays Homer acted DREADFULLY on ‘As the Bell Rings’. If he hasn’t gotten any better since then… the movie’s going to be a bit of a fail whenever Homer is onscreen, I’m sorry to say

sophie you cant really compare this role with a role on As the bell rings, a children’s show based on the young american demographic. if he’d been on round the twist i doubt you’d be saying the same thing.
i know deniz will be great as homer, i can say he’s a great actor.

Think about it. If he couldn’t act, he wouldn’t have got the part as the second most important character.

Who the hell thought Lee looked like that? I thought he was supposed to have some form of sex appeal with the aussie ladies not the asian ones!! What in the world would Elle see in him exactly? The book would have to be re-written so that Elle has to choose between Homer and Kevin because Lee does not fit sex appeal at all! I thought that Lee was supposed to have tanned skin with manly features? This guys a scrawny little nerd asian with no appeal to the females what so ever! Make lee more like Daniel Henney (Xmen Origins: Wolverine) and you have your self a Lee with sex appeal! Sorry Chris Pang but you just dont fit the profile! Nasty!

I don’t think the initial attraction to Ellie was his body or face. It was Lee’s mind. The rest kind of came after she decided she liked him.

No official date has been announced yet. We originally thought it would be a June/July release but higher members of the board are starting to a little later in August or September maybe. We do know that filming is almost over, finishing up with studio filmiing, I believe I heard. No other details.

Chris Pang background is actually tawainese from Melbourne. My brother use to go to the same highschool as he did.. his quite tall for an asian and I reckon his been working out for the role coz he use to be skinny as! LOL. Wasnt very popular, He has a sorta lame personality and is forever trying to crack into the aussie showbiz. His getting a hot body though!! I know his on FB and Twitter!

Am I the only one who thinks Chris Pang is really good looking? Its just on this picture he looks awkward!
On youtube, twitter and stuff, he’s hott!

i agree that ppl are being a little harsh, but i imagined that lee was a bit hotter, chris was a bit skinnier, and um, isn’t kevin sposed to be the oldest? he looks like the youngest here. Homer is pretty good though. btw, fi is supposed to be a bit paler and i imagined her with blonde hair….
thats all i have to complain about though, otherwise, they did a pretty good job

Notice that your key phrase is “I imagined”, emphasis on the word “I”. This is your interpretation and the people who set the cast obviously differ from your vision.
